Market status, growth trends and new demands on the industry
The Russian market for dietary supplements (DS) has been growing steadily for the fifth year in a row, and the government is actively integrating vitamins into the healthcare system. We explore whether the industry can maintain this momentum.
According to the operator of the Honest Sign labeling system, domestic legal production of dietary supplements exceeded 197 million packages in the first quarter of 2026. This represents a 9.5% increase over the same period last year, but a 10.9% decrease compared to the fourth quarter of 2025.
The Central Federal District remains the leader in production, producing 86.8 million packages during the reporting period- 44% of the Russian total. The Siberian Federal District ranks second with 46.5 million packages, or 23.6% of the country's total.
During this period, dietary supplement sales totaled 232.4 million packages, a 9.7% decrease compared to the fourth quarter of 2025. However, Russian manufacturers retained their dominant position, accounting for 85% of the total volume of products brought into circulation.
Vitamins constitute the largest category of domestic production, accounting for 62 million packages, or 31.4% of all dietary supplements produced. Products of plant and animal origin are in second place, with 34.1 million packages (17.3%), and minerals are third, with 27.2 million packages (13.8%).
Supplement prices are showing moderate growth: in the first quarter, product costs increased by 2-6% compared to the fourth quarter of 2025. "This could be due to both increased production costs and changes in the supply structure," notes Chestny Znak. Notably, products sold at below-average prices account for the largest share of final sales - 64%. The "Average Price" segment is significantly smaller, accounting for only 5%.
By the end of 2025, the legal dietary supplement market in Russia reached 279 billion rubles, with 894 million packages in circulation. Russian manufacturers accounted for 84% of the market.
The first quarter of 2026 figures increased compared to the same period last year, although they are below the fourth quarter of 2025. According to Honest Sign forecasts, the supply of supplements will approach one billion packages in 2026.
Bio-STM specialists have recorded steady growth in the Russian dietary supplement market over the past five years and attribute this to several factors. The first is the departure of Western brands from the country starting in 2022.
"Solgar, Nature's Bounty, Natrol, Swisse, GNC, and NBTY Group have left the market or significantly reduced their presence," Bio-STM reports. "This has freed up significant market share - estimated at 15-25% in value terms. These niches are occupied by Russian manufacturers and Belarusian and Kazakh brands, but demand for a number of products remains unsatisfied."
The second driver is the healthy lifestyle trend. Urban residents aged 25–45 are increasingly including vitamin and mineral supplements and sports nutrition in their diets. According to VTsIOM (2025), more than 80% of dietary supplement consumers are 25–35 years old, and 68% of Russians purchase supplements at least once a year.
Government policy has served as an additional catalyst for demand. Since 2025, Russia has been implementing the national project "Long and Active Life," aimed at increasing life expectancy and fostering a culture of preventative health.
The fourth factor is the growing popularity of marketplaces. Online platforms have made dietary supplements readily available across the country: customers in any region can order products with delivery in 1-3 days. Last year, Russians purchased supplements worth 55 billion rubles through marketplaces and other online channels. However, starting September 1, 2025, the sale of dietary supplements without state registration on Russian marketplaces will be prohibited - a measure aimed at preventing the spread of counterfeit products.
According to the Union of Dietary Supplement Manufacturers, the gray market for dietary supplements accounts for approximately 20% of the legal market, Forbes reports. Regulators, meanwhile, are declaring an active process of legalizing the industry: according to Ekaterina Priezzheva, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of Russia, the share of illegal dietary supplement sales has decreased from 22% to 5% between 2022 and 2025.
Every year, requirements for the production and sale of supplements become more stringent - this is done to protect consumers from low-quality and prohibited products. As early as March 2026, Chestny Znak strengthened controls at the product introduction stage: now, product card registration and batch registration are impossible without a valid state registration certificate. If its status is anything other than "signed and valid," the system will not allow the product to be released into circulation until the data is fully corrected or the permitting documentation is updated. Previously, such verification was absent, creating loopholes for unregistered products to enter the market.

Experts previously noted that the new requirements make additive registration more complex, requiring significant time and financial resources. Not all manufacturers are able to adapt to the new conditions, which primarily threatens small businesses.
The changes affected not only manufacturers but also healthcare professionals. As early as September 2025, it was announced that doctors would be able to prescribe dietary supplements to patients, raising questions among both healthcare professionals and manufacturers. Later, authorities clarified the procedure: which supplements could be prescribed, who had the authority to do so, and how to record prescriptions in documentation (Order of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation dated November 17, 2025 No. 669n and Federal Law dated June 7, 2025 No. 150-FZ). The law entered into force on March 1, 2026.
According to the new regulations, dietary supplements can be prescribed by attending physicians, paramedics, and obstetricians if they are assigned the functions of the attending physician. The procedure introduces several mandatory conditions:

For dietary supplement manufacturers and importers, the law changes the old rules of the game: if a product isn't on the Ministry of Health's approved list, no doctor can prescribe it to a patient.
